Being and Becoming a Teacher
One way to understand teacher development is through a stage theory. I (Louann) like to discuss an article by Anne Wescott Dodd early in the semester, when preservice teachers are thinking about who they want to be and how they want to present themselves in their statement of philosophy that they send out with their student teaching application. We often return to the ideas in Dodd--Learning to Read the Classroom.pdf
Although there is disagreement about whether stage theories are reliable, I am more interested in using Dodd's ideas as a springboard against which we can compare observations and experience. In that way, it's been quite valuable to us.

I hope that these notes capture at least a bit of the richness of our meeting. Feel free to ask me about anything that isn't clear.
